How to Help a Friend With Depression

Many people may wonder how to help a friend with depression. Depression is a serious emotional problem that many people go through. It is a dark and gloomy time, leaving people feeling extremely sad, fatigued, hopeless and miserable. There are several steps to follow that might help a friend through a depression stage. Follow these tips to better assist a friend who is going though a very difficult time.

  1. First: Act sensitive towards the friend

When a friend is going through depression, it is highly advised to remain sensitive and aware of his or her feelings and emotions. Remain sensitive by using gentle, subtle words that are comforting and genuine. Show support with great love and care. The last thing a depressed person needs is force, such as telling him or her to snap out of it.

  2. Second: Have integrity and remain natural

The key to acting as a supporter is to simply remain natural and genuine. People with depression are often vulnerable and in need of supporters. Show concerns that are genuine and honest, as the energy is easily absorbed. Stay by your friend's side, and show him or her love and support throughout the entire duration of the depression.

  3. Third: Spend some time alone with the friend

Take the time to spend quality time with the friend. Engaging in an intimate and personal one-on-one conversation helps with the recovery process. Get involved in group meetings, whether with several other friends, counselors, therapists or family. Surrounding a depressed person with good company, conversation, love and care helps to increase feelings of positivity.
