What Is Depression?

Anyone can relate to the feeling of sadness as a response to the struggles of life, but when these feelings turn into something more permanent, then it is referred to as depression. This is a clinically diagnosed disorder that affects millions of people across the world.
Symptoms of depression
There are many signs that a person is suffering from depression. A person may have intense feelings of hoplessness and worthlessness than can lead to a variety of effects. He or she may have problems sleeping or a lack of interest in nearly all of his or her normal daily activities. The sufferer can have thoughts of death and/or suicide that are associated with severe depression. This disorder can also cause significant weight gain or weight loss in a short period of time, due to either overeating and lack of activity or a decreased desire to eat.
Treatments of Depression
Depression is treated in a variety of ways. One of the most common treatments is through the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. These work to correct a hormonal imbalance that may cause depression in a person. Serotonin is a hormone that is directly linked to how a person feels, and by increasing its presence in the body, they elevate a person's mood. Another treatment that is very common is the use of therapy. Some people are depressed because of deep-seated problems that they have within themselves, and, through therapy, these problems can get addressed and hopefully corrected.
Depression is one of the most common psychiatric disorders. Many people have felt unhappy or sad at times, but when they feel this way all the time, then it is time to regard this as clinical depression. To overcome this, there are several ways to treat the disorder and help the person live a normal, happy life.
